Baptism

What, Why, and How

Why Do You Need to Be Saved?

The Bible teaches that every person has been created by God, but we are separated from Him because of sin. Sin isn’t just the bad things we do; it’s a condition that affects our hearts and lives, distancing us from God and leading to spiritual death.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19

Baptism doesn’t save you—it’s not a requirement for salvation—but it is an outward expression of an inward change. It’s a way to identify with Christ and publicly proclaim that you belong to Him.

What Is Believer’s Baptism?

Believer’s baptism is when someone chooses to be baptized after making a personal decision to follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior. It reflects the pattern we see in the New Testament, where baptism follows faith in Christ.

“Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” – Acts 2:41

Believer’s baptism is distinct from infant baptism. While infant baptism is often a commitment made by parents on behalf of a child, believer’s baptism is a decision you make yourself after coming to faith in Jesus. It’s a conscious, personal step of obedience and a celebration of your salvation.

How Does Baptism Work?

At SOJO Church, we practice baptism by immersion, which means being fully submerged in water. This method best reflects the biblical example and symbolism of baptism:

Dying to your old self: Going under the water symbolizes your old life of sin being buried.
Rising to new life: Coming up from the water represents your new life in Christ through His resurrection.

“We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” – Romans 6:4

Understand the Meaning of Baptism

Baptism is for believers—those who have put their faith in Jesus. If you were baptized as a baby, this step doesn’t negate that experience but builds on it. Believer’s baptism is your personal declaration of faith.

FAQs About Baptism

What is the purpose of baptism?

Baptism is a public declaration of your faith in Jesus. It symbolizes your new life in Christ and your commitment to follow Him.

Does baptism save me?

No, baptism is not what saves you. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Baptism is a step of obedience and a celebration of the salvation you’ve already received.

Why do you baptize by immersion?

We follow the New Testament example of baptism by immersion. This method best represents the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

What’s the difference between infant baptism and believer’s baptism?

Infant baptism is often a commitment made by parents to raise a child in faith. Believer’s baptism is a personal decision made by someone who has placed their faith in Jesus. It’s a step of obedience following salvation.

Can I be baptized if I was baptized as a baby?

Yes! Many people choose to be baptized as believers after making a personal decision to follow Jesus. This does not negate your infant baptism but serves as your personal declaration of faith.

What should I wear for baptism?

Wear clothes you’re comfortable getting wet in, such as a dark T-shirt and shorts. We’ll provide towels and anything else you need.

Can my child be baptized?

Yes, if your child has made a personal decision to follow Jesus and understands the meaning of baptism, they can be baptized.

When can I be baptized?

We hold baptism services regularly at SOJO Church. Let us know you’re ready, and we’ll work with you to schedule your baptism.
